VAPE Magazine is serving as a partner at the upcoming Global Legends Series exhibition soccer game, and we were excited to see Landon Donovan at the press conference.
The Global Legends Series (GLS), a soccer series between two sides of the world’s most decorated and accomplished international players, will bring its unique brand of competition, celebration and charity to Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas for the first time in the United States on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The announcement was confirmed yesterday at a press conference held at The Thomas & Mack Center’s Si Redd Room. GLS CEO and cCo-Founder James Davies Yandle made the announcement, joined by GLS standout participants Landon Donovan, former Team USA forward, and Alessandro Del Piero, legend of Italian soccer club Juventus and the Italian national team.
“The last couple of years have been great for U.S. soccer,” Donovan said. “The Global Legends Series realizes the growth of the game in the USA, and I am looking forward to walking out on the field with some of the greatest players I played with, and against. It will be a great feeling to put my cleats back on and compete right here on home soil.”
The match will feature two teams comprised of 25 world soccer greats who have won the biggest competitions. The teams will be lead out by opposing captains—the 2006 World Cup-winning captain, Fabio Cannavaro, and Portuguese legend, Luis Figo.
GLS Las Vegas will feature famous soccer stars including Donovan and Del Piero, as well as Mexico’s all-time leading goal scorer, Jared Borgetti, and his former teammate, Oswaldo Sanchez. Other notables are 11-time Premier League champion and former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, and Premier League legend Michael Owen.
These legends come together to compete in matches around the world in support of their chosen charities. The 2016 Las Vegas GLS event will benefit Free the Children, an organization that implements culturally appropriate international development projects that help families and communities lift themselves out of poverty.
The first game of the series, held in Bangkok, resulted in an eight-to-five victory for Team Cannavaro. A sold out crowd at SCG Stadium were treated to a high scoring game with some memorable goals from Paul Scholes, Clarence Seedorf and Michel Salgado.
Tickets for GLS Las Vegas start at $35 and are available now at http://www.unlvtickets.com. The game will kick off at the Sam Boyd Stadium at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 20. Gates open at 3 p.m.
